かくしき【格式】

1 〔位･家柄〕 status; social standing.

●男は格式ある家の出と見えて, やつれた中にも品があった. The man seemed to be of good family and looked respectable in spite of his haggard appearance.

●お宅さまはうちなんぞとは格式が違います. I'm not in the same class as you. | You live in altogether higher circles than I do.

●格式の高いホテル a high-class [an exclusive, a prestigious] hotel.

●格式を重んじる親たちによって(身分違いの)二人の恋は引き裂かれた. The lovers were torn from each other by the girl's class-conscious parents.

2 〔しきたり･作法〕 a formality; formalities; a (fixed) rule; a way of doing things.

●いくら当人たちの自由とは言え, 結婚式にはやはりある程度の格式が必要だ. It's all very well to say the couple should decide, but there has to be some degree of formality at a wedding [a wedding really should follow some fixed rules].

●格式を重んじるあまり, 儀式の精神が忘れられてはいけない. It's important not to take the formalities so seriously that the spirit of the ceremony is forgotten.

●旧家にはそれなりの格式というものがある. Every old family has its own established formalities [way of doing things].
